Oils can be recommended to augment healing

Aromatherapy refers to the use of volatile plant oils, including essential oils, for psychological and physical well-being and it is a complementary modality in natural medicine.

Aromatherapy is a therapy using aromatic scents and aromatherapy essential oils can be used in many ways. The essential oils are aromatic essences extracted from plants, flowers, trees, fruits, bark, grasses and seeds and have therapeutic, psychological, and physiological properties, which improve health and treat illness.

There are around 150 essential oils. Some of the therapeutic benefits of these Aromatherapy essential oils range from being antiseptic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, pain- relieving, antidepressant and expectorant. Other oils have tremendous relaxing benefits, and yet there are other aromatherapy oils that help improve digestion, are anti diuretic etc.

Aromatherapy is used for example in the relief of pain e.g. clary sage for menstrual pain, care for the skin, alleviate tension and fatigue and invigorate the entire body. Essential oils can affect the mood, alleviate fatigue, reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

Essential oils can be added to the bath, massaged into the skin, inhaled directly or diffused to scent an entire room.

Two basic mechanisms are offered to explain how aromatherapy works:

    1. One - when inhaled, essential oils work on the brain and nervous system through stimulation of the olfactory nerves.

    2. The other is the direct pharmacological effects of the essential oils which provides therapeutic benefits
